This is very easy to reproduce. However this issue is not an Adaptive Server issue but instead is a weakness with Unix File Systems. When we do a disk init we ask the file system if there is enough room for the space requested, if the file system comes back and says yes we create the device. However, because we are doing sparse file allocations, essentially writing only the first and last page and the allocation pages we do not use up all of the space that we requested. If we did we would get an error at that time. Now along comes a create database and we try to use all (well, maybe not all) of the pages and we get the 3225 error. So this has more to do with the way File Systems calculate the free space we asked for. Note that the same scenario would occur if the space was available initially when the device was created but prior to using all the space requested (via create or alter db) another operation idependant of ASE used up the space. Again this is a weakness with UFS and would not occur if raw partitions were used.
